Dear Annie: First, may I start off by saying I love animals, especially dogs. I have had several dogs and loved them, as they loved me, unconditionally.

But when did it come to be that all dogs are service dogs-- When did it start being OK to bring a dog into a grocery, a pharmacy and even a restaurant.
하지만 언제 모든 개가 서비스견이 된 건가요-- 언제부터 개를 식료품점, 약국, 심지어 식당 안으로 들여오는 게 허용됐나요.

Some people have allergies to animals, and I don’t think it is OK to expose everyone to dogs. In your home or car, I get that. It’s your space, and you have every right to keep your best friend by your side.
동물에 앨러지가 있는 사람들도 있으니 전 모든 사람에게 개를 노출시키는 게 괜찮다고 생각하지 않아요. 자신의 집이나 차 안이라면 이해해요. 자신의 공간이니 자신의 절친을 계속 옆에 두는 것도 당연하죠.

But is it me, or has this gotten totally out of hand-- When I was growing up, you would never dream of bringing an animal of any kind in a food store.
하지만 제가 문제인가요 아님 이 상황이 전혀 통제할 수 없게 된 건가요-- 제가 클 땐 동물을 식료품점에 데려오는 건 꿈도 꾸지 못했어요.

I have contacted people at the headquarters of the grocery chain, and they tell me that the only thing an employee can do is ask the customer whether the animal is a service dog and, if so, what the nature of its service is. No documents are required.
식료품 체인점 본사의 사람들을 만나봤는데 직원들이 할 수 있는 일은 고객에게 개가 서비스견인지 아닌지, 그리고 만약 그렇다면 어떤 종류의 서비스인지 물어보는 것 뿐이라더군요. 서류는 필요치 않고요.

People, leave your animals at home. If you can’t, then go to a grocery that delivers your groceries to your car in the parking lot. There is no charge for that.
여러분, 동물들은 집에 놔두세요. 그럴 수 없다면 물품을 주차장에 있는 차로 실어다주는 식료품점으로 가세요. 요금도 없어요.

I am fed up with having to worry about whether my grocery cart will be full of pet hair. Perhaps the food industry should take into consideration those of us who don’t bring their animals inside instead of catering to those who do. -- Frustrated

Dear Frustrated: You’re not the first person who has written to me about this. Whenever people lie or break the rules so they can bring their pet dog around town with them, it negatively impacts the many people who really do need service or therapy dogs for medical reasons. So to anyone out there faking it: Shame on you.
좌절한 분께: 이런 내용으로 글을 보내시는 건 님이 처음이 아니에요. 사람들이 개를 데리고 다니려 거짓말을 하거나 규정을 깰 때마다 의학적 이유로 서비스 혹은 치유견이 정말로 필요한 많은 사람들에게 부정적인 영향을 주고 있어요. 그러니 속임수를 쓰는 분들은 부끄러운 줄을 알아야 해요.

That being said, as a bystander, you can’t know for sure what the situation is. It’s not always clear when someone has a condition that necessitates a service animal. So withhold judgment. It’s better for your blood pressure.
그렇긴 하지만 옆에서 보기만 해서는 어떤 상황인지 확신할 수 없어요. 서비스 동물이 필요한 상황이란 게 항상 명확한 것은 아니에요. 그러니 비판을 보류하세요. 그게 님의 혈압을 위해 좋습니다.
